The aim of pharmacology study is to determine pharmacological activity of the drug under study and, if possible, its metabolites. Specific activity of the drug is investigated in pharmacology studies, safety is evaluated in special experiments designed to study the pharmacological effects beyond the planned therapeutic indications.
Determination and choice of study design depend on the effects of the active drug substance, one or the other pharmacotherapeutic group, that it belongs to, indications for use of this pharmacotherapeutic group or the active ingredient.
This type of study enables to determine not only the therapeutic activity of the drug but also concomitant pharmacological and therapeutic effects, and safety parameters. In most cases, the assessment is carried out in experimental animals in which the target pathology model is artificially created.
